The portrayal of Latina women in the media is very often subject of fetishization, inappropriate cultural appropriation and lack of representation. Latina women are usually portrayed as exotic or sexual creatures that are purely there to be exploited by the audience.
Latina women face “double jeopardy because their identity is partially formed by both sexual and racial stereotypes” (Teresa Correa, Framing Latinas: Hispanic Women through the lenses of Spanish-language and English-Language news media, University of Texas at Austin, ).
This subject matter is extremely personal because of my experience as a Colombian woman. In this photo series I perform and stage these offensive stereotypes in a confrontational manner. I want to challenge the viewer and make them feel guilty for looking at the images by using confrontational text. The tone of the text is meant to be aggressive and assertive.
